Samatha and vipassana are explicitly referred to in Tibetan Buddhism. According to Thrangu Rinpoche, when shamatha and vipashyana are combined, as in the mainstream tradition Madhyamaka approach of ancestors like Shantideva and Kamalashila , through samatha disturbing emotions are abandoned, which thus facilitates vipashyana , "clear seeing. In contrast, in the siddha tradition of the direct approach of Mahamudra and Dzogchen , vipashyana is ascertained directly through looking into one's own mind. After this initial recognition of vipashyana , the steadiness of shamatha is developed within that recognition.
