Janoff-Bulman describes what happens to a person, male or female, when dealing with sudden life-disrupting events. The two greatest "assumptions" or basic beliefs assaulted by trauma are that the world is safe and that I am a valuable asset in it.
She speaks to victims and therapists alike in non-clinical terms that are healing and educational. Therapists could easily recommend this book to persons surviving traumatic events. I recomend this book to anyone who wanted to learn real life applied psychology.
This is a must read book! I love it, is better than expected. I highly recommend this book for anyone that either professionally works with trauma survivors or is a survivor themselves. I am a person coming to terms with my life as a child in a violent family situation and the physical injuries I received some forty years ago.
I found my inner thoughts and feelings being expressed on the pages of this book as if she had interviewed me!! Democratic Therapeutic Community. Pillar 1: Shared Knowledge. Evolutionary Biology. Kinds of Stress.

Ronnie Janoff-Bulman: Political Motives
Group Curriculum. Loss of Benevolence When people are traumatized, these assumptions are at best challenged, and at worst demolished. Loss of Order Because we need the world to be meaningful, the traumatized person has to fit the trauma into some kind of schema that makes sense. Loss of Meaning Traumatic experiences destroy the sense of meaningfulness of the world in which the victim lives.
Loss of Comfort from Others Victims of trauma often become increasingly isolated from other people. Loss of Faith This loss of faith in oneself is mirrored in loss of faith in the capacity of others to provide help or comfort, as well as the loss of faith in a benevolent higher power to whom one can turn.
